We’ve all heard of this one: Stress is bad for the health. But if you’re like most people, stress is a normal part of everyday life. Sometimes, there are large stressful events like deaths, planning a wedding or a new baby. But mainly, you’ll find that stress comes in smaller packages related to pressures at work, household responsibilities or a combination of both. After all, it’s very hard to relax after a day of hard work, only to go home to do chores and take care of family members.
There are other stresses that can take a toll on your health. Sometimes there are money woes to deal with or marital problems at home. Other times, there are family crises that require immediate and constant attention. So how do you cope with all the stress?
The answer is simple. Relaxation techniques can help you de-stress and unwind after stressful times. You may say that you simply don’t have the time for yourself, but remind yourself that you deserve it. More so, it is extremely important to your health. High blood pressure, headaches, ulcer, body aches and depression can result from too much stress.
There are simple ways to relax and de-stress. Relaxation techniques generally require little preparation, so you may find some techniques to be very easy to manage. In fact, you can use some of these techniques at work or during stressful activities.
The number one defense against stress is exercise. It helps to loosen your tense muscles and gives you something else to focus on. Your body will release endorphins, a powerful pain suppressant, which will make you feel better instantly. You’ll feel energized and soothed, even after a short workout. Yoga and meditation are also great ways to de-stress. If you can’t find a way to exercise because of time or physical limitations, try stretching, singing or deep breathing. This will also help relieve stress.
You can also opt for aroma therapy or soothing baths using aromatic scents. You can buy them in the form of bath salts and oils in many supermarkets, specialty stores or department stores. A warm bath using these relaxing oils will take away feelings of stress as tense muscles relax. For an extra de-stressing experience, you can light some candles near your bathtub and listen to soft music.
Sometimes, soothing activities may not be enough. It’s vital to get proper nutrients and vitamins everyday, especially when you’re under immense stress. Be sure to take a multi-vitamin. In addition, a dose of B12 can also be administered by your doctor. B12 promotes well-being, so a deficiency in this area can increase your level of stress. As well, herbs like Saint John’s Wort may be used as a supplement with your doctor’s permission. Visit your physician for his advice and diagnosis before using any medication or supplement.
Another relaxation technique involves food and beverage intake. When experiencing high levels of stress, you should avoid stimulants like caffeine and sugar. Stimulants like these can reduce your ability to tolerate stress. Watch your coffee and tea intake and stay away from sweets. Nuts, however, are full of magnesium, B vitamins and other vitamins and minerals, so snack on these if you get a sweet tooth.
A great way to relax and de-stress is simple: Just relax! Forget the television and don’t even think about surfing the web. You may view these activities as “leisurely”, but it’s the last thing a stressful person needs. An overload of information may create additional stress. When we watch intense TV programs or browse the Internet, you’re taking in much information, whether or not you want to. Instead, try listening to some music or try one of the above methods to de-stress.
When trying out various relaxation techniques, bear in mind that each person is different and will therefore react differently to the techniques. You’ll find that some relaxation techniques work better or worse than others and you may find different ways to relax and de-stress in the process. Whatever you do, keep the stress down and make time for yourself to recover from stress before taking care of other areas of your life. A life of less stress is much more productive and enjoyable!
